Old Reigatian Cricket Club Victorious!

The Old Reigatian CC inaugural fixture as a club started hopefully, as they mean to go on, with a 64 run victory over the Brighton College Staff Cricket team, otherwise more affectionately known as the “Haymakers”.

The weather gods smiled down as the temperature soared to  26 degrees and ORCC elected to bat first on the picturesque away ground. Our opening batsmen started at quite a pace scoring at close enough to 10 an over. The first wicket fell with the score on 80, with Antony Ireland grabbing 50 of them.  OR’s Charlie Steedman (’11) and Nick Gunning (’11), came and went relatively cheaply, but Ireland continued onto a fine 100 off of 92 balls. James Ross (’08) rolled back the years with some characteristic biffs as the score finished on 215/7 from 35 overs.

A splendid tea and a chance for a swift beer was enjoyed in the beautiful sun outside of Brighton’s delightful Sammy Woods pavilion and the task of bowling was taken to with vigour, as the openers dismissed the first 3 batsmen for 0.  A few loopy pies were put to the boundary before Phil Davies (’08) picked up a wicket and Ben Hatton (’11) was introduced for his first bowl in a few years.

A strong 6th wicket partnership of 77 in rapid time from the hosts gave them a sniff of a chance but Davies and Gunning held off the advance and finished off the innings despite some late order hitting from the tail end (including a former Lancashire county player and a Glamorgan county School boy player). Duncan Wilcox was the pick of the bowlers ending with 4-18 off of 6.

This was an enjoyable preparation for the Cricketer Trophy match against Warwick on Sunday 5 June, where hopefully we can muster enough enthusiasm from the Old Reigatian community to get together a strong team to topple the Midlands school.
