Dream Steam Social with Paul Gustard

On Wednesday 21 November 2018, the RGS Foundation hosted the Dream Steam Social with Paul Gustard – sponsored by Fluid at Steam Wine Bar, a stones throw from Monument.

Once again, our fabulous host for the evening was Stephen Chenery – owner of Steam Wine Bar and former RGS pupil (’87) who laid on a wonderful evening for members of the Reigatian Community in aid of the Changing Lives campaign.

To a warm welcome, our special guest Paul Gustard, former Leicester Tigers, London Irish & Saracens player/coach, ex-England Defense Coach and current Harlequins Head Coach was introduced. Paul spoke of his early days growing up and playing rugby in Blaydon, some ‘physical’ changing room tales of his time at Tigers and his development from player to coach including his time within the England camp with Eddie Jones.

All guests were then treated to a delicious dinner culminating in Stephen taking to the floor once again to take charge of the main Auction, which was the focus of our fundraising activity for the evening. There was a wide variety of impressive items on offer including an experience that doesn’t come round very often. Paul Gustard very generously offered a Harlequins Training Day Experience that included the opportunity to rub shoulders with all the Quins stars, watch a 1st team training session, have lunch with the players followed by a private training session run by coaches from Quins for up to 10 kids. A fantastic item. As the bids flew in, it was clear that two individuals were very keen on this wonderful experience, Paul didn’t want either to miss out on this so generously offered the experience to both – a magnificent gesture and commitment to the Changing Lives campaign.

The aim of the evening was to raise funds to support a particular case that was highlighted on the evening – the generosity of the group was overwhelming and delighted to announce that just over £15,000 was collected from the evening – an incredible achievement.

The evening was wrapped up with a Q&A with guests taking the opportunity to pick Paul’s brains on everything from 2019 Rugby World Cup winners to the importance of man-management as a Coach.

Our thanks go to Stephen Chenery for hosting this fantastic evening, to RGS Parent Al Gregson Group Managing Director at Fluid for his support and of course Paul Gustard who took time out from his busy schedule to join us share his stories from his playing and coaching career. Most importantly thank you to everyone that attending and supported the evening, it was a resounding success.

Following on from the success of the previous two Dream Steam socials, we will be planning a similar night for 2019 – please keep your eyes peeled for further announcements.
