RGS We Care: who have we helped?

When we first launched the RGS We Care campaign, we really didn’t know what to expect. We asked for volunteers; we asked who needed our help, and it has been an absolute pleasure matchmaking the two!

Indeed, we have been inundated with offers of help, ranging from collecting and delivering much-needed supplies, to making calls to those who might feel anxious and alone.

Watch this video to get a glimpse into the work of one of our volunteers.
In another video, Olly Driscoll (RGS ’16) explains how rewarding it is to be able to help.

RGS We Care volunteers have:

  • Collected and delivered food shopping and prescriptions
  • Banked cheques for residents of a local retirement village
  • Distributed visors to healthcare organisations, including hospitals, care homes and GP surgeries

Feedback from those helped

Val, a former RGS parent, needed someone to pick up some food for her. We paired her up with Natalie Laing (RGS ’19), who has subsequently made several essential deliveries and Val could not be more grateful:

“Just brilliant! Natalie is a star! She has delivered all of the requested shopping items and has brightened my day in a way that makes me extremely appreciative!”

A former student, now based in America, was worried about his parents who live in a remote part of Scotland. Not knowing what response we might get, we shared this request with our community. Amazingly, we received three separate offers of help, proving just how extensive our community reach is!

On the last day before lockdown, Upper Sixth and Third Form students wrote letters to older members of the Reigatian community. We shared some of these in a mailing sent to our over 70s (at the time, the group who had already been advised to self-isolate). The response to these letters has been overwhelming:

“I was touched to receive today your letter on behalf of the Foundation Team. In this critical period in our national life, when all of us are having to rethink the way we live our lives, it is good to know that you, and the students at RGS, are reaching out to others.”
