Reigatian Charity Golf Day 2024

On 13 June 2024, we arrived at Reigate Hill Golf Club ready for a fun packed day on the green. Sadly, the weather wasn’t very seasonal and instead a chilly autumnal climate was in full effect. This didn’t dampen our golfers’ spirits however, as laughter rose from the registration table as people pulled out all varying lengths of silly string, some much longer than others! Whilst everyone got their scorecard, bought mulligans and collected their goodie bag, others enjoyed a quick catch up with each other, admiring their matching team shirts adorned with skull pineapple heads in a Hawaiian shirt vibe, affectionally coined – the ‘tropical skulls’. We had the chance for everyone to peruse the raffle items, which included a variety of RGS, golf and wine prizes, vouchers courtesy of Kukri, Simply Sports and Everyman and a Samsung Galaxy watch, kindly donated by Alex Moody-Stuart.

Our auction prizes this year came in the form of event-based items, all allowing the purchaser to make memories. A golf simulator experience, as voted the best in the world by Golf Digest, kindly donated by Robin Lewis (RGS parent), a lunch with AP McCoy at STEAM wine bar, courtesy of Stephen Chenery (RGS 1980-1987), Goodwood Revival tickets, kindly donated by Al Moody-Stuart, a bottomless brunch at the interactive and award winning restaurant Inamo, donated by Lee Skinner (RGS 1985-1992) and two tickets to England v South Africa at Twickenham.

The klaxon sounded at 1pm for a shotgun start and our golfers began their 18 holes. Cath and Jodie from RGS Foundation were on hand between the 9th and 18th holes to provide refreshments and snacks. There was an exciting offering from Dropkick Brewing, who kindly brought along their pop-up bar offering tasters of their pale ale, IPA and session lager to quench the thirst of our golfers. We also had samples from Urban Sips, who kindly branded their most popular cocktail in a can, The Rio Breeze with our 350 logo and campaign colours.

The warm clubhouse was a welcome sight at the end of the course, as people managed to avoid the onset of rain and took comfort in a cold pint and dinner of chicken wraps and fries as the scorecards were handed in and counted up by David Hylton (former RGS parent). A huge thank you to David for taking the time to add up all the scores. With the winners ready to be announced, Jonny Hylton RGS Foundation Director (RGS ’99) thanked everyone for coming along and reiterated the importance of community and support for these events. He went on to say that as a school, we celebrate 350 years in 2025 and there will be many events that everyone can attend, support and get involved with including, sporting, music and celebration. The heart of the message is that we want to continue the legacy of the school for another 350 years and we need to maintain the momentum of engagement between community and school to ensure the legacy lives on after we are here.

The raffle got underway followed by the auction, but as ever, everyone waited with baited breath to hear who won the prestigious title of winners of the 2024 Reigatian Charity Golf day.

For the second year in a row, the winners were Stephen Cahill (RGS parent), Lee Bonniface, Kris Jarrams and Richard Leutsche. Barry Devine (RGS ’90) of Devine Homes and principal sponsor, stepped up to award the team their trophies and champagne. Nearest the Pin went to Justyn Jackson and Longest Drive had just the one contender – Rob Brack. Congratulations to everyone that won, including Ben Rutland, Dan Rutland, George Browning and Molly Moore who went to great efforts to keep hold of their ball for the thunderball competition – only to discover there wasn’t one running!

It was a great day and we are hugely grateful once again to everyone that supported with this event being the success it was. Thank you to Reigate Hill Golf Club for hosting.
