Today we celebrate the birth of our Founder, Henry Smith.
In 1675, the great philanthropist Henry Smith, left £1,000 in his will to be used for relief of the poor and to educate local children in Reigate. Reigate Grammar School was founded to educate boys in reading, writing and simple calculations. Remarkably, to this day, the school still stands upon its original site.
As we approach the school’s 350th anniversary, Founder’s Day acts as a reminder of the benefits of being a Reigatian: the sense of belonging and shared values; the journey you have experienced at RGS; the opportunities and friendships that you enjoy as a result of your relationship with the school, no matter what your connection.
More details about how we will mark this occasion to follow.
